IRVINE, CA – Big West Conference Commissioner Dennis Farrell today announced a number of staff promotions and title
changes effective immediately. Farrell has elevated Erica Monteabaro from Associate Commissioner/Compliance and
Governance to Senior Associate Commissioner/Institutional Services; Steve Chen from Director of New Media/Marketing
to Assistant Commissioner/Branding and External Affairs; Melissa Deckers from Assistant Director of Championships
and Marketing to Director of Marketing; and Olivia Phelps from Information/New Media Assistant to Assistant Director
Monteabaro joined the Big West Conference Office in 2000 and has been the conference’s primary compliance liaison
with its member institutions as well as being the conference’s point person on NCAA governance issues. She will continue
to oversee the conference office staff’s responsibilities in both areas while expanding the conference office’s membership
educational outreach efforts.
Joining the conference staff in 2006, Chen coordinated video streaming and exchange projects before expanding his
role to overseeing new media in 2008, and then by directing marketing efforts and the Big West Basketball Tournament
beginning in 2012. In his new capacity, he will work in coordination with Assistant Commissioner/Communications Mike
Villamor to expand the conference’s branding projects and external messaging. He will also continue to oversee the
conference’s ESPN3 projects.
Deckers joined the Big West Conference in 2011, serving in compliance before expanding her responsibilities to assisting
with the conference’s marketing, sponsorship fulfillment, and championship efforts. In her updated role, she will work
with Chen to oversee the development of the Big West brand, take primary responsibility for the conference office’s
marketing and sponsorship fulfillment projects, while continuing to serve in her capacity as a championship director.
Phelps has been a member of the Conference Office staff since 2013, with sports information and new media responsibilities.
She will continue in her role, but with an increased emphasis on the creation of written and video content for distribution
on the conference’s digital and social media platforms.
“All four individuals’ contributions to the Big West Conference have been invaluable,” said Farrell. “I know in their new
capacities they will bring a high level of energy that will serve the conference membership well and will continue to
elevate the public’s awareness of the Big West.”
The Big West Conference enters its 48th academic year in 2016-17.
