The Cal Poly Mustangs, who captured their first Big West Conference championship two weeks ago and are competing in an NCAA regional for the first time in the 17-year history of the program, compiled a four-person 20-over-par 308 total for 15th place in the 18-team field at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional hosted by the University of New Mexico at The Championship Golf Course.
Pepperdine leads with a one-under-par 287 total, followed by Stanford at 290 and USC, California and Washington, all tied for third at 295.
Sophomore left-hander Mallory Muehlbauer is in the top 25 with a round of 74 after the first of three rounds. Mustangs Jamie Binns and Desiree Gillaspy are in a tie for 49th place with 77s while Jamie Harada is tied for 80th at 80. Sophie Bergland is tied for 85th with an 81.
Cal Poly will tee off from the 10th hole Tuesday from 8:24 to 9 a.m. PDT.
Also playing as an individual at the Albuquerque Regional are Cal State Fullerton’s and UC Davis’ Paige Lee. Edberg shot 1-over-par 73 during the first round and ended the day tied for 14th place and four shots back for the leader. The senior, competing in her third consecutive NCAA Regional, birdied twice and shot even par on 13 holes. Edberg, Gonzaga’s Bianca Pagdanganan and Fresno State's Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir are currently tied for 14th – each competing as individuals.
Lee shot a 5-over-par 77 and is tied for 49th on the overall leaderboard. Although hampered by a slow start to the round, Lee rallied to birdies on the 13th and 18th to finish the back nine at 3-over 39, then shot 2-over 38 on the front to finish in the 14-person tie for 49th.
At the NCAA Lubbock Regional, UC Riverside’s Jakeishya Le, also competing as an individual, opened the day one with a five-over par 77. She is tied for 55th with four other players after 18 holes at The Rawls Course. Le sits nine shots back of the lead held by UCLA's Lilia Vu at -4.
The other two regionals are being held at Ironwood Golf and Country Club in Greenville, N.C., and Scarlet Course at Ohio State Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.
The 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship is scheduled for May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. Each of the four regionals will send the top six teams as well as the top three individuals not on teams advancing to the nationals hosted by Northern Illinois University.
