CSF's Edberg Fires Tournament-Low Round, Cal Poly Sits 16th After Day Two Of NCAA Regional

Cal Poly, playing in its first NCAA Tournament, dropped one spot to16th after the second round of play at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional. The Mustangs posted a 24-over four-person 312 total on the 6,637-yard, par-72 UNM South Championship Course on the University of New Mexico campus.

Stanford also did some climbing Tuesday, posting a five-under-par 283 to jump over Pepperdine into first place. The Waves recorded a 290 and their 577 total is four shots behind the Cardinal. USC is another three shots back in third place.

Cal Poly’s top individual after 36 holes of play is Jamie Binns, who followed Monday’s 77 with a 74 Tuesday and is tied for 48th place with her 151 total.  Mallory Muehlbauer added an 80 to her first-round 74 and is tied for 66th place with her 154 total while Desiree Gillaspy posted a 79 for a 156 total and a tie for 77th place.

Rounding out Cal Poly’s scoring were Jamie Harada, who bettered her first-round 80 by one stroke and is in 89th place with her 159 aggregate, and Sophie Bergland with rounds of 81 and 82 for a 163 total and 91st place.

Cal Poly will tee off from the 10th hole Tuesday from 9:09 to 9:45 a.m. PDT.

Also playing as an individual at the Albuquerque Regional are Cal State Fullerton’s and UC Davis’ Paige Lee.  Edberg fired a tournament-low 4-under-par 68 during the second round of play.  She birdied six times and shot even par on 10 holes. Edberg, currently tied for second in the standings with a two-round score of 3-under-par-141, will tee off at 7:15 a.m. PT on Wednesday for the third and final round of play.

With a 3-over-par 75 on Tuesday and a 152 total overall, Lee enters the final round in a tie for 51st overall and tied for fifth among the tournament’s individual competitors. She opened her Tuesday round on the 10th hole, shooting 3-over 39 for the back nine, then settling down to an even-par 36 on the front. She is one of six individual competitors in the field, and the only one from UC Davis.

At the NCAA  Lubbock Regional, UC Riverside’s Jakeishya Le, also competing as an individual,  carded pars on 10 of her final 11 holes in round two of the Lubbock NCAA Regional Tuesday on her way to a six-over par 78. Heading into tomorrow’s final round, she sits in a tie for 64th at +11, 16 strokes behind overnight leader Monica Vaughn of Arizona State at -5.  Her final round of the regional gets underway at 6:50 am PT off hole no. 10.

The other two regionals are  being held at Ironwood Golf and Country Club in Greenville, N.C., and Scarlet Course at Ohio State Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.

The 2017 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship is scheduled for May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. Each of the four regionals will send the top six teams as well as the top three individuals not on teams advancing to the nationals hosted by Northern Illinois University.
