Day Two Of NCAA Men's Golf Regional Complete

Sophomore Nick Swanson and freshman Brett Bennett each carded an even-par 70 as UC Santa Barbara shot a 290, shaving six shots off its first round score, remaining in 11th-place after two rounds of the NCAA Stanford Regional on Tuesday.

At one point on Tuesday, the Gauchos pulled into a tie with Ohio State for 10th-place but they couldn't hold on and trail the Buckeyes by four shots entering Wednesday's final round. They are also four shots ahead of Sacramento State, the 12th-place team.

Swanson is now tied for 36th with a 3-over 143 after two rounds. Bennett is tied for 41st at 4-over 144.  Zach Smith, who shot a 5-over par 75 on Tuesday, is now 8-over after two rounds and is tied for 58th at 148. Willy Moffly, is 11-over and tied for 66th while Brandon Bauman is tied for 70th at 12-over par.

Wednesday's final round begins with Baylor at 18-under par and leading Stanford by seven shots. The Cardinal, at 11-under, are six strokes ahead of Pepperdine (-5), eight up on Oklahoma (-3) and 11 up of BYU, Georgia Tech and North Florida.

Oklahoma's Brad Dalke is the individual leader after two rounds with an 11-under par 129. Stanford's Maverick McNealy is second at 8-under par while Baylor teammates Cooper Dossey adn Matthew Perrine are third and fourth at 6-under and 5-under respectively.

The Big West also had three student-athletes playing as individuals at the NCAA Stanford Regional -  Felix Mory of CSUN, who claimed individual medalist honors at the 2017 Big West Conference Men’s Golf Championship, David Kim of UC Irvine and Andres Gonzalez of Long Beach State. 

UC Irvine junior David Kim is in eighth place after shooting even-par 70 in Tuesday’s second round of the NCAA Regional at the Stanford Golf Course. Kim's round included three birdies, an eagle (for the second straight day) and five bogeys.  He has a 36-hole total of 3-under 137 entering Wednesday's final round as he remains in the quest for a spot at the NCAA Championships.

Mory, playing in his first NCAA Regional, improved on his first round score by five strokes with a 3-under 67 on day two to tie for 13th place with 1-under 139.

Gonzalez carded a 1-over 71 on day two for a 36-hole total of 146  to move up to a tie for 49th. 

The other five 54-hole regional tournaments sites are University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas, Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash., Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind., University Club in Baton Rouge, La., and The Grove in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Thirteen teams and ten individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Northern Illinois University is the host institution for the 2017 championships.
