ICYMI: Here are the top five things that happened in the Big West last week….In Case You Missed It!
1. Quartet Is Perfect After First Week Of Conference Play
Following the first week of Big West Conference action, four teams maintained a perfect record - Cal Poly, CSUN, UC Santa Barbara and Hawai’i. The Mustangs opened with a strong statement, sweeping all three of their opponents - UC Davis, Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside. Defending champion Hawai’i downed UC Davis and UC Irvine, who entered league play with a conference-best 12-1 mark. UC Santa Barbara, who struggled in nonconference play, took care of business against UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton while CSUN knocked off Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State.
2. McCaskill, Palacios Selected As Candidates For Senior CLASS Award
Senior standouts Jovani McCaskill of CSUN and UC Irvine’s Kiana Palacios were selected as candidates for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award in Division I collegiate soccer as announced Friday. Selected from a nationwide pool for the distinction, McCaskill and Palacios are among 30 women nominees who excel in the areas of community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award honors the student athlete who most embodies the four characteristics. Full Story
3. UC Santa Barbara Baseball Tabbed Top 25 Recruiting Class
Both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball announced their top ranked baseball recruiting classes over the past two weeks and UC Santa Barbara was named in both lists. The Gauchos were tabbed 19th in Collegiate Baseball’s poll and listed No. 22 according to Baseball America.
4. Big West Releases Basketball Television Schedules
Big West Conference Commissioner Dennis Farrell announced last Tuesday that ESPN networks will televise a minimum of 17 men’s basketball games during the 2017-18 season. It was also announced by Prime Ticket, the official regional telecast home of Big West Conference basketball, that 14 games will be featured on the network for the 2017-18 season.
5. Former Titan Khris Davis Becomes First Oakland A’s player With Consecutive 40-homer Seasons
On Saturday, Khris Davis hit his 40th home run of the year, making him the first Oakland A’s player ever to blast 40 in consecutive seasons. The only other Athletic to do so in franchise history was Jimmie Foxx, with the Philadelphia A’s back in 1932-34. Full Story
