Cal Poly, Long Beach State Represented In Women's Volleyball Awards
Cal Poly setter Taylor Nelson joined the Long Beach State duo of Hailey Harward and Brooke Earkman on the women’s volleyball honor roll this week.
Nelson Directs Cal Poly Offense To Big West Sweep
Cal Poly senior Taylor Nelson (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) averaged 12.14 assists per set in a pair of conference victories, earning her first career Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week award.
The 6-0 setter totaled 85 assists over the two matches as the Mustangs swept their Big West road trip against Long Beach State and CSUN.
Cal Poly hit a combined .313 (105-28-246) while Taylor directing the offense. The 62 kills the Mustangs produced against Long Beach State represented the second-most they have had in a match this season. Nelson’s 50 assists was her second-highest total.
In the four-set win over the Beach, Nelson added 12 digs for her third assist-dig double-double of the season. She completed her stat line with three kills, an ace and a block.
Nelson tallied a match-high 35 assists to go along with three kills, four digs, an acce and two blocks in the sweep of the Matadors.
Nelson’s play helped the Mustangs win their ninth and 10th straight matches while improving the team to 15-2 overall, the program’s best start since the 1985 squad began 18-1.

Harward Leads Beach Defensive Effort
Long Beach State sophomore Hailey Harward (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) claimed her third career Big West Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week honor after averaging over five digs per set in a split of conference matches.
The 5-9 libero averaged 5.14 digs per set to help the Beach play Cal Poly tough in a four-set loss and sweep UC Santa Barbara at home.
Harward notched a match-high 23 digs against the Mustangs, including 17 in the first two sets alone. It was her third 20-dig performance of 2017.
Harward collected 13 scoops against the Gauchos while adding two assists and an ace.

Earkman Dazzles In First Two Career Starts
Making the first two starts of her career, Long Beach State’s Brooke Earkman set personal bests to capture Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week honors.
The 5-7 outside hitter made her first career start on the outside against conference heavyweight Cal Poly and turned in an impressive effort. Earkman had a career-best and team-high 13 kills to go along with two digs and one block in the four-set loss.
Earkman spearheaded the Beach offensive effort in a straight set sweep of UC Santa Barbara. She improved upon her career best in kills with 15, and produced another career-high in hitting percentage (.382), committing just two errors in 34 swings.
She tallied six kills in set one and seven more on 12 error-free swings in the second. She filled out the stat sheet with three digs and three blocks against the Gauchos.
