Carr, Smith Capture Women's Soccer Accolades

Sydney Carr continued her offensive emergence, while Alexis Smith tied a program career record for shutouts.

Carr Boots Her Way To Award

UC Irvine freshman Sydney Carr (Portland, Ore./El Modena HS) continued her recent flurry of production with two goals and two assists in a pair of wins, securing Big West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors.

After compiling one assist through her first 10 collegiate matches, Carr has accumulated three goals and five assists in her last three games.  She has contributed to seven of the last nine Anteater goals in that span.

Carr tallied an assist on UCI’s first goal in Friday night’s 2-1 road victory at Cal Poly.  She sent in a cross from the right side that was headed in by Shelby Lee in the 30th minute.

The forward dominated the scene on Sunday in a 4-1 triumph at UC Santa Barbara.  She produced two goals and an assist, and her first goal of the afternoon also represented her first career game-winner.

Carr assisted on the first UCI goal in just the fourth minute as Noel Baham headed in her cross.  Baham returned the favor, feeding Carr, who delivered in the box for a 2-0 lead.

Carr notched her first career brace on an Olympico style goal in the 86th minute as her corner kick bended into the goal for the final 4-1 score.

All four of Carr’s shots were on frame this week.

Others nominated: Tala Haddad (Cal State Fullerton); Tori Bolden (Long Beach State); Mckenna Moriarty (UC Davis); Darielle O’Brien (UC Riverside)

Smith Ties Shutout Record, Sets Career High In Saves

Junior Alexis Smith (San Jose, Calif./Tennessee) performed magnificently in goal for UC Davis in a shutout, garnering Big West Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week recognition.

The goalkeeper tied a career high with 11 saves in the 1-0 blanking of Hawai‘i, as the Aggies snapped a five-game losing streak with a win in the Big West opener for both teams Thursday.

Nine of her 11 saves – the most in a match by a league keeper this season – came in the second half as the Rainbow Wahine turned up the pressure with a 13-3 shot advantage after the break.

In lowering her goals against average to 1.30, Smith earned her 17th career shutout to tie the UC Davis record initially established by Kelly Parker (1997-00).  Smith’s 11 saves matched her total set against then-No. 19 California back on Aug. 27.

Smith made numerous point-blank stops on Hawai‘i down the stretch, including three saves on attempts by Rainbow Wahine leading scorer Sonest Furtado.
