Five Undefeated Teams Look To Remain Perfect In Second Week Of Conference Play

RIVERSIDE OPENS LEAGUE PLAY, PERFECT
UC Riverside defeated UC Santa Barbara 4-1 Friday and Cal Poly 1-0 on the road Sunday to earn a perfect 2-0 mark to open conference play. The last time the Highlanders opened Big West action 2-0 was in 2013 when UCR would advance to the Big West Tournament title match before falling to Cal State Fullerton. Last weekend also marks the first time in program historu that Riverside has beaten both opponents on the road in the same year (CP, UCSB). The Highlanders look to repeat their “flip the script” year of 2013 as they were picked to finish eighth in the Coaches Preseason Poll.
IRVINE EARNS SIX POINTS
UC Irvine came home from its central coast road trip unscathed last weekend as the Anteaters defeated Cal Poly 2-1 in double overtime and UC Santa Barbara 4-1. UCI opened league play undefeated and earned the most amount of points possible on the road. The ’Eaters also opened up league unbeated a season ago with UCI went 2-0-1 through its first three games before advancing to the Big West Tournament championship game. The Anteaters look to contend for another title this season.
DEMIAN BROWN IS GOLDEN
As Cal State Fullerton defeated CSUN in a 3-0 shutout victory Sunday,
coach Demian Brown recorded his 100th career win and moved to 100-87-29 all time. In his 11th year at the helm, coach Brown has led the Titans to a 7-3-3 mark overall and a perfect 1-0 mark in league so far.
ALEXIS SMITH TIES SCHOOL RECORD
UC Davis senior goalkeeper Alexis Smith notched her 17th career shutout as the Aggies defeated Hawai‘i 1-0 in its first head-to-head conference showdown. The senior helped the Ags open Big West play undefeated and snapped a UH three-match win-streak. The senior needs five more clean sheets to break into the Big West top 10 the category. The record, set by Liz Ramos from 2005-08 stands at 34.
CSUN’s JoJo McCaskill has also made headlines in the category and is currently tied for eighth-most all time with 24 career clean sheets.
BEACH BEATS ‘BOWS
Long Beach State returned from a two-week hiatus in an impressive fashion, taking down Hawai‘i in a 2-0 shutout win to open league play undefeated. Last weekend marked the third-straight year the Beach earned points in its first weekend of BWC play.
CSUN HOME TO TOURNAMENT IN 2017
CSUN will host the 2017 Big West Women’s Soccer Tournament from November 2-5 at Matador Soccer Field. Consistent with previous years, the four teams with the best marks in league at the close of the regular season will earn berths to the conference tournament.
