Gaucho Duo Spearheads Women's Volleyball Weekly Honor Roll


The UC Santa Barbara tandem of Lindsey Ruddins and Nicole Omwanghe joined Hawai‘i libero Savanah Kahakai on the women’s volleyball weekly awards list.

Ruddins Leads UC Santa Barbara To 3-0 Week

Averaging 6.64 kills per set on .300 hitting in three victories, UC Santa Barbara sophomore Lindsey Ruddins (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel HS) earned her second career Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week award.

The 6-2 outside hitter tallied 73 of the team’s 143 total kills in wins over UC Davis, Long Beach State and CSUN.

Ruddins pounded 26 kills against the Aggies, 27 versus the Beach and 20 more against the Matadors, giving her 20-plus kills in four straight and 12 matches overall this season.

Ruddins, who has led UCSB in kills in 16 straight appearances, hit .339 against UC Davis and added 15 digs.  Her 27 putaways against LBSU was her best in a conference match this season, while 16 digs secured her seventh double-double of the season.

She swung at a .325 clip (20-7-40) against the Matadors to go along with a pair of aces and blocks.

Kahakai Leads ‘Bows Defensively In Pair Of Sweeps

Hawai‘i senior Savanah Kahakai (Honolulu, O’ahu/Farrington HS) claimed her first Big West Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week award since 2015 after averaging 4.83 digs in a pair of home sweeps.

The 5-8 libero led UH with 29 digs against UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton.  She has now recorded double-digit digs in 17 matches this season, including a string of 11 straight.

Kahakai had 10 digs against the Highlanders and a match-high 19 against the Titans, coming up just one scoop shy of hitting the 20-dig mark for the fifth time this year.

In the CSF match, she passed the 1,300 career dig mark and moved within three digs shy of No. 4 on the school’s career list alongside Tara Hittle (2004-08).

Omwanghe Hits .341 In Three Gaucho Wins

UC Santa Barbara middle blocker Nicole Omwanghe (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS) posted her second Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week award on the strength of solid all-around play in three wins.

Omwanghe averaged 2.09 kills and 1.18 blocks per set while hitting a solid .341 (23-8-44) in Gaucho triumphs over UC Davis, Long Beach State and CSUN.

She hit over .400 against the Aggies and Beach.  Her 11 kills against LBSU tied for her second-highest total in a match this season.  She hit .450 against LBSU with just two errors in 20 swings.

Omwanghe had at least two blocks in all three contests, including a match-high tying seven versus the Matadors.
