UC Riverside Advances On Sanchez's Goal In 88th Minute
The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team (5-12-1, 4-5-1) had just one shot on goal in its Big West Tournament First Round match at UC Santa Barbara (6-8-5, 4-3-3) on Wednesday night, but that was all it needed. Junior forward Eduardo Sanchez shielded off a defender to fire in the game's only goal in the 88th minute, giving the Highlanders their first ever Big West Tournament win.
The Highlanders have now won a season-best three consecutive matches, going unbeaten over their last four outings. This ties their fourth-longest unbeaten streak ever against Big West competition.
Eduardo Sanchez becomes the third Highlander ever to score in the Big West Tournament. It was his third goal of the season, good for second on the team.
Sophomore forward Olli Pirinen tallied his third assist of the season with a long throw, setting Sanchez up for the goal. Pirinen now has three assists on the season, which is tied for the team-lead.
The Highlanders earned their first victory over the Gauchos since Oct. 22, 2011. UC Riverside was 1-11-1 all-time in games at UC Santa Barbara prior to Wednesday's match.
Rubio's OT Goal Gives CSUN 3-2 Victory Over Sacramento State
Julio Rubio scored with 2:41 remaining in overtime to give CSUN a 3-2 victory over Sacramento State in the first round of the Big West Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Wednesday night.
Emmanuel Usen Jr. opened the scoring for the Matadors at 4:20 when he finished a Jeremy Degraffenreidt cross from the left side. Usen Jr. and Degraffenreidt teamed again 1:37 later for the second CSUN goal. Once again, Degraffenreidt used a crossing pass to set Usen Jr. up, allowing Usen Jr. to score his 10th goal of the season.
The Hornets got on the board in the 28th minute. Cylus Sandoval pushed a ball ahead to Matt Carnefix. CSUN goalie Henrik Regitnig challenged Carnefix who dribbled around the Matadors' netminder to score his third of the season.
