#BigWestCares: The Big West Gives Back This Holiday Season
This holiday season, Big West student-athletes give back to show that #BigWestCares.
Cal Poly Athletics: Block P continued its holiday tradition this season. With all 21 teams participating, the Mustangs adopted 50 children from 24 families through Salvation Army’s Adopt-An-Angel program. The CP Student-Athlete Advisory Committee purchased toys, clothing and gift cards while all donations benefited local families in the San Luis Obispo area.
CSUN Athletics: The CSUN Athletics Department got in the holiday spirit and hosted a toy drive to support the Northridge Hospital Foundation, a Dignity Health Member. The toy drive began with the CSUN Women's Basketball game against Weber State on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. Fans that brought a new unwrapped toy to the games at the Matadome between Nov. 30 and Dec. 18 received two complimentary tickets to the game. The Beach also participated in the CSULB Cherishing the Children Holiday Party -- an event hosted by CSULB for local foster children and children in need. Each child receives a gift and photo with Santa, a goodie bag and refreshments.
UC Davis Athletics: The Aggies held a Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive at all men’s and women’s home basketball games throughout the month of November, all donated goods went to the Pantry of UC Davis. Additionally, UC Davis held a fire relief gift card donation drive during men’s and women’s basketball exhibition games to aid those affected by the fires in Sonoma and Napa county.
UC Davis Baseball: The UC Davis baseball team traveled to Shriners Children’s Hospital in Sacramento to take part in a haunted house event for the children in celebration of Halloween.
UC Davis Basketball: The men’s basketball team gave back this holiday season by traveling to various elementary schools throughout the Yolo and Sacramento Counties to spend time reading with students. The program is designed for student-athletes to engage with the community youth and encourage students to read as much as possible. Additionally, both the men’s and women’s teams held a Toy Drive during home games in early December. The toys will be donated to the UC Davis Children’s Hospital.
UC Irvine Athletics: Once again, UC Irvine Athletics teamed up with the UC Irvine Police Department for their annual Teddy Bear Toy Drive spreading the holiday spirit across Orange County. UCI student-athletes and staff joined officers when they delivered gifts to children receiving care in the Neonatal Intensive Care and Burn units at UC Irvine Health on Thursday, Dec. 14. Scotty passed out gifts and spread holiday cheer by posing for pictures. The Christmas event and health fair is put on by local community groups to benefit Riverside’s underprivileged youth.
UC Santa Barbara Women’s Water Polo: In only a few months, the UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team will be in the pool thrashing, bashing, and battling it out against other teams to hopefully win a Big West conference title, but for now, that will have to wait because something more important is on the Gauchos' minds: the community. Over the past couple of weeks, the UCSB women's water polo team volunteered for two separate charity organizations: the Children's Recreation Program and Food From the Heart. Read more HERE.
The Big West Conference: The Big West along with Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, UC Irvine and UC Riverside, participated in Spark of Love's annual Stuff-A-Bus at Honda Center in Anaheim on Dec. 15. The Big West helped Spark of Love fill busses to benefit underprivilged youth in the community.
