Long Beach State No. 1 In AVCA Poll
2018 Men's Volleyball Release No. 3
Long Beach State is 6-0 – off to its best start since 2008 – and took over the No. 1 spot in the AVCA poll.
Big West Continues To Dominate
After a 16-1 start to commemorate the inaugural season of Big West men’s volleyball last week, the six schools continued their winning ways in week two. The Big West posted a 9-1 mark with the only loss coming to then-No. 3 UCLA in five sets. However, UC Irvine rebounded from that setback to post back-to-back wins over ranked opponents then-No. 12 USC and No. 10 Pepperdine. Long Beach State defeated a pair of ranked foes on the road in No. 11 Lewis and then-No. 7 Loyola-Chicago, while Hawai‘i notched a 3-0 record at the Grow The Game Challenge in Nashville, Tenn., which included a win over then-No. 12 Grand Canyon. The Big West is 25-2 overall in two weeks of play.
Against The Ranked Teams
Nine of the 25 wins the Big West has compiled so far have been against teams ranked in the AVCA Division I-II weekly poll. The Big West is 9-1 against nationally ranked competition. More opportunities to stash away résumé building victories exist again this week with three more matches against ranked opponents.
No. 2 UCLA at UC San Diego
UC Irvine at No. 12 Grand Canyon
UC Santa Barbara at No. 10 Pepperdine
Long Beach State Vaults To No. 1
Long Beach State’s 6-0 start – coupled with Ohio State’s loss to BYU last week – moved the Beach into the No. 1 slot in this week’s AVCA’s Division I-II poll. It is the 38th time in school history that LBSU has ascended to the top spot, the most recent being Apr. 24, 2017. LBSU looks to keep its hold on that perch with one match this week, on Saturday at Stanford.
Hawai‘i is No. 4 in the AVCA poll after a 6-0 start. UC Irvine is No. 6 and CSUN No. 7 in the rankings. The Anteaters have played five straight ranked opponents to begin the 2018 season and have fared well with a 4-1 performance.
Tuaniga Named National Player Of The Week
Big West Player of the Week Josh Tuaniga earned national praise from VolleyMob as its Player of the Week, the second straight week a league player has been honored. UC Irvine’s Karl Apfelbach received the award last week.
UC Santa Barbara Reschedules Matches
UC Santa Barbara had two road matches postponed last week due to the recent mudslides in Montecito that have blocked travel down U.S. Highway 101. The USC match has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 1 and the UCLA contest for Wednesday, March 28.
Big West Tournament On The Horizon
The first annual Big West Men’s Volleyball Tournament will be held April 19-21 at Long Beach State’s Walter Pyramid. All six teams will compete for the tourney title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Hawai‘i (2020) and UC Irvine (2021) are the next hosts.
