Big West At A Glance

Busy Month For Hawai’i: 
The men’s golf program is teaming up with the University of Hawai’i to kick off the Spring season co-hosting the Amer Ari Intercollegiate February 1-3 at Waikoloa Kings’ Golf Course in Waikoloa, Hawai`i. Big West foe UC Davis is also slated to attend the three-day event.

Later in the month UH hosts the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Wailua Golf Course (par: 72, yardage: 6991) in Lihu’e, Hawai’i’.  Joining the Rainbow Warriors are Arizona, BYU, CSUN, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, New Mexico, North Carolina, Northern Colorado, Saint Mary’s, Texas A&M, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UNC-Wilmington, UNLV, Utah, UTEP, Virginia and Washington State.

LBSU, UCR Women Host Annual Events: 
February 12-13 marks the date for the Long Beach State’s women’s golf team’s annual tournament, The Gold Rush.  The El Dorado Park Golf Course in Long Beach, Calif., is set to host the event that includes Big West foes Cal Poly and UC Irvine.

UC Riverside is the other women’s program that is hosting a February event with the Battle at the Rock at Oak Quarry Golf Club, which happens to coincide with LBSU’s event.  While three Big West schools are competing in Long Beach, the other five members are slated to participate in the Riverside tournament - Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, UC Davis, UC Riverside and Hawai’i.

Around The Big West: 
Cal Poly’s Jamie Binns, a member of the 2016-17 Big West Women’s Golf Championship team, currently paces the Big West Conference with a 73.4 stroke average.  She book-ended the fall season with fifth place finishes.  The first coming at the Rose City Collegiate and the second at the Mustangs’ home event, the Cal Poly Invitational.  Long Beach State’s Haley Tygret and Jennifer Yu, each sporting a 73.6 stroke average after three events, are close behind in a tie for second place. The Beach’s Maria Davis played in a single fall tournament and carded a 72.3 score.

On the men’s side, Cal State Fullerton’s Derek Castillo leads the way with a impressive 69.9 stroke average over three events during the Fall season. All three finishes were top 20, which includes a tie for seventh and individual medalist honors.  Long Beach State’s Joe Fryer sits second with a 70.3 stroke average and is followed by CSUN’s Feliz Mory and his 71.2 average.
