Big West Continues Challenging Non-Conference Schedule

2018 Men's Volleyball Release No. 5

The Big West has recorded 15 victories against teams ranked in the top-15 of the Sports Imports/AVCA poll at the time of the match.  Long Beach State (No. 1), Hawai‘i (No. 3) and UC Irvine (No. 4) are three of the top four programs in the country.

Big West Racks Up More Top Wins
The Big West finished 7-6 last week to improve to 39-10 overall in non-conference competition this season.   The six losses last week exceeded the combined four defeats the conference sustained in the first three weeks of the season alone.  However, the Big West continued to pad the overall résumé with crucial wins over top nationally ranked competition.

UC Irvine extended its winning streak to seven straight  matches with back-to-back victories over No. 5 BYU.  As a result, the Anteaters elevated two spots to No. 4 in this week’s Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II poll.  Hawai‘i also split a pair of contests against No. 2 UCLA on the islands, winning in four sets in the first contest before losing in four in the rematch.  UH remained at No. 3 in the poll.  Long Beach State improved to 3-0 against top 15 foes and 9-0 overall, staying put at No. 1 in the country for the third straight week.

Ranking Rumblings
Fifteen of the 39 wins the Big West has compiled so far have been against teams ranked in the AVCA Division I-II weekly poll.  Five of the six Big West schools are ranked top 15 nationally.  In addition to LBSU, UH and UCI, CSUN is No. 11 and UC Santa Barbara No. 14 in the AVCA poll.  UC San Diego is on the cusp of breaking into the poll.  The Tritons are receiving votes this week.

Three high profile matches are on this week’s men’s volleyball ledger.

No. 14 UC Santa Barbara at No. 6 BYU
No. 14 UC Santa Barbara at No. 6 BYU
No. 2 UCLA at No. 4 UC Irvine

Long Beach State Off To Best Start In 10 Years
Long Beach State’s 9-0 start is the best for the program since 2008.  That year, the Beach advanced to the NCAA Final Four.  The Beach attempt to start a campaign 10-0 for the first time since 1999 when they take the court on Friday against Concordia.  The best start in school history was 16-0, set by the 1992 team.

Hawai‘i Home Streak Ends
Hawai‘i is enjoying a 7-1 start through eight matches for the third consecutive year.  The four-set loss to UCLA ended a pair of impressive streaks – 26 consecutive home wins dating back to 2016 and 24 straight regular season, non-conference wins going back to 2015.

UC Irvine Playing Top Heavy Schedule
UC Irvine has played eight of its 10 matches against top 15 opponents and owns a glowing 7-1 record against the top competition.  The wins include twice against No. 5 BYU, No. 6 Lewis and No. 10 Pepperdine.

Big West Tournament On The Horizon

The first annual Big West Men’s Volleyball Tournament will be held April 19-21 at Long Beach State’s Walter Pyramid.  All six teams will compete for the tourney title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
