Prentice Nabs First Career Water Polo Honor
UC Irvine freshman Tara Prentice (Temecula, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) had an impressive debut to her collegiate career, earning Big West Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week accolades after leading her team in scoring at the Cal Invite.
The utility player notched eight goals to help the Anteaters finish 1-2 overall at the tournament. She added six steals, four drawn exclusions and one field block.
Prentice actually netted all eight of her goals against No. 16 San Jose State and host No. 2 Cal. She was held scoreless against No. 1 Stanford.
In her collegiate debut, Prentice sparked the Anteaters to a 13-6 win over the Spartans with a team-high four goals. She put the ‘Eaters on the board first with a power play goal at 4:37 remaining in the first quarter. She later tied the score at 2-2 to end the first frame.
Against the highly ranked Bears, Prentice tallied another team-high four goals to pace UCI in the 10-8 loss. With Cal holding an early 3-0 lead, Prentice converted a 6-on-5 opportunity to get UCI in the scoring column. Prentice cashed in another goal with 23 seconds remaining in the third quarter to pull UCI within one, 7-6, and added her fourth goal in the final frame to make it 9-8.
Prentice also registered one assist against SJSU and two more versus Cal.
