2018 Men's Volleyball Release No. 6
Big West men's volleyball schools have forged a 45-14 record against non-conference opposition heading into a relatively light week of action. UC San Diego hosts No. 7 BYU in the marquee match of the schedule.
Big West Non-Conference Success Continues
The Big West turned in a 6-3 record last week, and the overall non-conference record is now an outstanding 45-14. The six members continue non-conference play this week with an eye toward the Big West opener on Feb. 23.
UC Santa Barbara earned a victory at then-No. 6 BYU last week. The Big West has collected a 16-11 record against teams ranked in Sports Imports/AVCA Top 15. Long Beach State is 3-0 against top 15 competition, while UC Irvine owns a 7-2 mark against ranked foes. Hawai‘i is 3-1, UC Santa Barbara is 3-3, CSUN is 0-3 and UC San Diego 0-2.
Five Big West schools remain ranked in the Sports Imports/AVCA top 15 poll this week. Long Beach State stays at No. 1 in the country, with Hawai‘i at No. 3 and UC Irvine at No. 4, giving the Big West the most impressive trio in all of collegiate men’s volleyball. The depth is on display as CSUN checks in at No. 12 and UCSB No. 13 in the poll. UC San Diego is receiving votes.

Long Beach State Improves To 10-0
Long Beach State is the lone remaining undefeated team in the country at 10-0. The Beach has equalled the program’s best start since the 1999 squad started 10-0 and eventually reached the NCAA Final Four. The 1991 team also started out 10-0. However, the best start in school history belongs to the 1992 team, which went 16-0 before losing its first match. LBSU travels out of state this week to take on Harvard and George Mason.
Gauchos Earn Impressive Victory
UC Santa Barbara pulled off a historic upset of No. 6 Brigham Young, becoming just the fourth team in the past 10 years to sweep the Cougars at Smith Fieldhouse. The Gauchos knocked off BYU by set scores of 25-23, 25-20, 27-25 to emerge victorious from a venue where the Cougars have registered an .855 winning percentage over the past eight seasons. It was UCSB’s third win over a top-10 team this season.
Tritons Post Best Start In School History
UC San Diego’s sweep of Princeton last week improved the team to 7-2 overall, marking the first time in school history – since the program’s inception in 1989 – that the Tritons started out a season that well. UCSD also equaled its win total from the 2017 (7-20) campaign. Later that week, UCSD lost in four sets to Stanford, but in that match senior Tanner Syftestad became the sixth player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills.
Big West Tournament On The Horizon
The first annual Big West Men’s Volleyball Tournament will be held April 19-21 at Long Beach State’s Walter Pyramid. All six teams will compete for the tourney title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
