AROUND THE BIG WEST
TRITON INVITATIONAL ON DECK
Five clubs will head down to La Jolla this weekend for the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego. CSUN, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara will be spread into four brackets of four teams each with play slated for two different pools. A champion will be crowded after the event which includes #2 USC, #4 UCLA, #6 Arizona State and #12 Indiana in the 16-team field.
Hawai’i has shown to be the class of the league early on, having won seven straight after dropping its season opener to then #4 California. The Rainbows have outscored the opposition 93-38 since that opening loss and have two matches of 20 or more goals. UH also has a marquee win on its resume as it took down #5 Arizona State a week ago at the ASU Invitational.
CHECK THE STATS
Thanks to busy schedules in the first few weeks, UC Santa Barbara and Hawai’i have the lionshare of top scorers in the league. UCSB’s Sarah Snyder and Sarah Kreiser lead in goals with 22 and 20, respectively, while the Gauchos’ Kate Pipkin (36) is the top point producer just ahead of UH’s Irene Gonzalez (30).
PICKING UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF
CSUN’s Madeline Sanchez was one of the league’s top scorers a year and she has not missed a beat in 2018. Sanchez has 12 goals so far this season, leading the league with 3.00 scores per outing. She also leads the league in points per game at 4.25, the only player in the league to average better than four points per game.
Nine players who earned either first or second team All-Big West honors return to the fold in 2018, five of those being first team honorees.
KLATT CLOSING IN
UC Irvine coach Dan Klatt, the winningest coach in league history, is closing in on another major milestone. Two more victories gives Klatt 200 for his career, making him the first coach in league history to attain the feat.
