CSUN, Long Beach State Honored With Men's Volleyball Awards


A pair of CSUN standouts joined a Long Beach State freshman regular to the awards stand as this week's men's volleyball honorees were announced.

Senior • Opposite • Los Angeles, Calif. • University HS

➜ CSUN senior Arvis Greene garnered his first career Big West Men’s Volleyball Player of the Week award following two solid performances against UCLA and Stanford.

➜ The 6-foot-7 opposite tallied 16 kills in each match as the Matadors lost a tough four-set battle to No. 2 UCLA and swept Stanford for the second time this season.

➜ Green hit .275 (16-5-40) against the Bruins and narrowly missed his first collegiate double-double as he chipped in with a career-high nine digs.

➜ He swung at a .265 (16-7-34) clip against the Cardinal, averaging 5.33 kills per set, and added an ace, a dig and three block assists.

➜ For the week, Greene hit .270 while averaging 4.57 kills, 1.43 digs and 0.43 blocks per set.

➜ CSUN senior Josiah Byers received his first Big West Men’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week honor as he dominated at the net against former MPSF rivals UCLA and Stanford.

➜ The 6-9 middle blocker averaged 2.00 blocks per set to help the Matadors to a split – a four-set loss to the second-ranked Bruins and a sweep of the Cardinal.

➜ Byers had six kills and six blocks (one solo) against the Bruins, and equaled his season high with eight blocks (three solo) versus the Cardinal.

➜ Byers hit .667 with no errors in nine attempts against UCLA.  He had four digs in that match and added two more against Stanford.  He hit .429 (8-2-14) for the week.

Middle Blocker • Middlefart, Denmark

➜ For the third time this season, Long Beach State middle blocker Simon Anderson is the Big West Men’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week as he was nearly perfect offensively in a pair of wins.

➜ Anderson hit .857 with 12 kills and no errors in 14 swings as the Beach swept Harvard and George Mason on the road.

➜ The 6-foot-8 Anderson knocked down seven kills in as many swings against George Mason for a 1.000 attack percentage.

➜ Anderson added a pair of blocks and an assist on the week.
