UC Davis Catapults Into Commissioner's Cup Lead


Big West Commissioner's Cup Winter Release


A strong basketball season powered UC Davis to an impressive lead in the Commissioner’s Cup race with just the spring season to go.

The Aggies swept the basketball titles to claim all 400 points during hoops season, upping their overall Cup average to 138.6. UCD was in third with a 115.0-point average after the fall, claiming the men’s soccer North Division title and placing in the top three in men’s and women’s cross country.

UC Santa Barbara remained in second place after basketball season with an overall point average of 121.4. The Gauchos finished in a tie for second place in men’s basketball and recorded a fourth-place finish on the women’s side. Those placings gave UCSB a 135.0 average across hoops, the third-best point average in the league.

Cal Poly, the leader coming out of the fall, is third with an overall average of 118.6. The Mustangs were led by the women’s basketball squad finishing in second in the league standings, giving it an average of 105.0 for hoops season. That average is a 40-point improvement from the end of basketball season a year ago.

UC Irvine is fourth overall after basketball season, as the tied for second men’s squad and third place women’s team upped its overall average to 111.4. The Anteaters’ basketball season average of 145.0 was second only to the first place UC Davis program. Fifth place belongs to Cal State Fullerton with an average of 96.4, while sixth is occupied by CSUN with a 86.4-point average. Seventh is Long Beach State at 76.7 with UC Riverside (74.3) and Hawai’i (64.0) completing the overall leaderboard following two seasons of competition.

The Big West Commissioner’s Cup, which started during the 1998-99 season, is awarded to the institution with the highest average point total following the 18 Conference sport seasons. Points are not awarded if the institution or conference does not sponsor the sport.

In determining a champion, the following round robin sports have points awarded on the basis of the final regular season standings, including a 20-point bonus for the champion. These sports are baseball, basketball, soccer, softball,  women’s tennis and indoor volleyball. In the sports of cross country, golf, men’s tennis, track & field, women’s beach volleyball and women’s water polo, the points are awarded based on finish at the Conference Championship. In the case of ties in all sports, points shall be awarded by combining points and dividing them equally among the tied teams.
