UC Irvine; UCD, CSUN Individuals Earn NCAA Berth


#BigWestChamps UC Irvine will be joined by BWC medalists Felix Mory (CSUN, 2017) and Ryan Han (UC Davis, 2018) at the NCAA Regional in Stockton, Calif.

The UC Irvine men’s golf team, who captured its eighth Big West Conference title yesterday to earn the automatic qualifier, is slated to compete in the Stockton NCAA Regional, as announced by the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee today. This is the 14th time in school history the ‘Eaters are competing as a team in an NCAA Regional and marks their first appearance since 2015.
The Reserve at Spanos Park is the site for Stockton Regional, hosted by University of Pacific May 14-16, and features 13 teams and 10 individuals, with 18 holes to be contested each day. This marks UC Irvine’s second trip to The Reserve at Spanos Park Golf Course for the 2017-18 campaign as it also participated in the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational back in October. 

Senior David Kim is tops on the Anteater squad with a 72.13 scoring average. He has held at least a share of the team lead in every tournament this year, including at the Big West Championships where he tied for third. Sophomore Jonathan Kang (75.26) also placed fifth at the conference tournament, while senior Ryan O’Connor (74.63) and junior Ramiz Jamal (75.30) tied for 11th. Senior Jonathan Young (75.43) rounded out UCI’s lineup in 23rd.

UC Davis’ junior Ryan Han, individual champion of the Big West Conference men’s golf championship, and CSUN’s senior Felix Mory, who received an at-large berth, are set to represent the league as individuals a the Stockton NCAA Regional as well. Han tops the Aggies’ squad with a 73.17 stroke average and led them with eight rounds at par or better during the 2017-18 season. This is Han’s second trip to the NCAA postseason, as he finished in a tie for 15th place at the Bremerton Regional as a freshman in 2015.

Mory was selected as an individual for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regional for the second straight year, making it the seventh regional appearance by a Matador men’s golfer. CSUN has had three players previously selected as individuals for the NCAA Regionals with Nick Delio earning a spot in 2009, 2010 and 2011, Pete Sisich earning a berth in 2003 and Chris Russo earning an individual spot in the Greensboro Invitational in 2012. He was the low Matador player in 11 of 12 tournaments this season and had six top 10 finishes and five top 20 finishes.

A total of 81 teams and 45 individuals are set to compete at one of six regional sites - Stockton, Calif. (Pacific), Raleigh, N.C. (NC State), Bryan, Texas (Texas A&M), Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State), Kissimmee, Fla. (UCF), and Norman, Okla. (Oklahoma).  The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 25-30 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Oklahoma State University is the host institution for the 2018 championships.
