Dirtbags Deliver in Series Sweep
Long Beach State teammates Leonard Jones and Clayton Andrews led their squad to its first series sweep of the season utilizing career-best performances, leading to their selections as the Big West Baseball Field Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
LEONARD JONES, LONG BEACH STATE – FIELD PLAYER OF THE WEEK

➜ Long Beach State freshman Leonard Jones went on a hitting tear in the team’s first series sweep of the season, as he was tabbed Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
➜ The first baseman scorched UC Riverside pitching, hitting .571 (8-for-14) with two doubles and a home run. He slugged .929 for the week.
➜ Jones played a role in 11 of LBSU’s 19 runs scored in the series as the Dirtbags outscored the Highlanders 19-9. He scored three runs and collected eight RBI.
➜ Jones posted multiple hits and multiple RBIs in all three games.
➜ On Friday, he established a career high with three RBI in a 6-2 victory. Jones had an RBI double in the first, and added RBI singles in the third and seventh to finish 3-for-5 at the plate.
➜ Jones matched his career best with another 3-hit effort in Saturday’s 8-3 win. He had a team-leading two RBIs and added a run scored.
➜ His bat was most impactful in Sunday’s 5-4 triumph that clinched the series sweep. He blasted his first career home run – a three-run shot in the first inning to give the Dirtbags early momentum. Jones later would double and score.
➜ Jones has multiple hits in six of the last seven games and leads LBSU in hitting with a .323 average.

CLAYTON ANDREWS, LONG BEACH STATE – PITCHER OF THE WEEK

➜ Long Beach State junior Clayton Andrews notched his second Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week award as he struck out a career-high 13 batters in a win at UC Riverside.
➜ The left hander had another commanding performance, going at least seven innings for the sixth time in 12 starts. He pitched 8.0 innings, scattering five hits and allowing just one run.
➜ Andrews did not walk a batter, and he has issued just one free pass over his last four starts – spanning the last 26.0 innings.
➜ In allowing the Highlanders to reach base only five times all game, Andrews equalled that mark with his own offensive effort. He matched a career high with four hits, and reached base safely in his first five trips to the plate.
➜ Andrews now has 92 strikeouts in just 76.2 innings pitched this season, and he lowered his ERA to 2.58.
