Meyer, Andrews Tabbed Baseball Weekly Honorees

5/21/2018

A five-hit performance from Nick Meyer and another shutdown performance from Clayton Andrews led to their selections as this week's baseball award winners.

NICK MEYER, CAL POLY – FIELD PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior • C • Mission Viejo, Calif. • Santa Margarita Catholic HS

➜ Junior Nick Meyer spearheaded a Cal Poly offensive attack that produced four wins, including a sweep of Central Coast rival UC Santa Barbara, that earned him his first Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week award.

➜ The catcher extended his hitting streak to 16 games with at least one hit in every contest.

➜ Meyer opened the week with a 5-for-6 effort against Pepperdine in a 15-6 victory.  All five hits were singles.  It was the first five-hit game by a Mustang in five years, as Denver Chavez had last accomplished the feat on April 7, 2013 versus UC Santa Barbara.

➜ Meyer then went 4-for-11 in the UCSB series as the Mustangs stretched their winning streak against the Gauchos to nine games.

➜ He produced the game-winning hit in Saturday’s 4-2 win with a two-run double in the eighth inning, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead.

➜ On Sunday, Meyer finished 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored as Cal Poly took a 9-3 decision.

➜ For the week, Meyer hit .529 (9-for-17) with five runs scored and three RBIs.  He slugged .706 over the four games.

Others nominated: Hank LoForte (Cal State Fullerton); Riley Conlan (CSUN); Ryan Anderson (UC Davis); Johnny Weeks (Hawai‘i)

CLAYTON ANDREWS, LONG BEACH STATE – PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Junior • LHP • Rohnert Park, Calif. • Cabrillo College

➜ Long Beach State junior Clayton Andrews delivered another masterful performance against a conference opponent, throwing seven innings of one-hit ball to collect his third straight Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week citation.

➜ The southpaw is the first to claim three straight pitcher awards since Cal State Fullerton’s Adam Johnson accomplished the feat in May of 2000.

➜ It is also the fourth Pitcher of the Week honor for Andrews this season.  The last thrower to earn four awards in one season was Noe Ramirez of Cal State Fullerton in 2010.

➜ Andrews had a no-hitter going through six innings against Hawai‘i before surrendering a leadoff single to Adam Fogel in the seventh.  He fanned the next two Rainbow Warrior hitters – his sixth and seventh of the game – and induced a fly out complete his seven frames of shutout ball in the 8-0 victory.

➜ Andrews, who had more hits (2) at the plate than he allowed (1) to UH, lowered his ERA in Big West games to a conference-best 1.31.  He also leads all pitchers with 60 strikeouts in Big West play.

➜ Making his case for Pitcher of the Year honors, Andrews has allowed just one run over the last 29.0 innings for a 0.31 ERA.  Over that span, he also has walked just four and fanned 37.

Others nominated: Taylor Dollard (Cal Poly); Blake Workman (Cal State Fullerton); Tei Vanderford (CSUN); Taylor Rashi (UC Irvine); Dylan Thomas (Hawai‘i)
