Five Big West track and field athletes advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA West Preliminary on day two of the competition at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif.

The quintet moved one step closer to qualifying for the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships that will be held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in June.

The top three finishers in six heats plus the next six fastest times reached the quarterfinals.

CSUN junior Joshua Turner was the first to qualify, as he ran 14.18 in the men's 110 meter hurdles to finish fourth in his heat and 20th overall.  He will run in heat two from lane eight in Saturday's quarterfinal race at 7:05 p.m.

Two Big West competitors from the women's 100 meter hurdles field posted qualifying times.  UC Santa Barbara junior Hope Bender ran a school record 13.33 to finish second in her heat and 11th overall.  The previous record of 13.59 was owned by heptathlon Olympian Barbara Nwaba. CSUN junior Sydney Mosley also qualified automatically as a top three finisher in her heat.  She placed third in a time of 13.63 seconds for 21st overall.  Mosley is slated for heat two while Bender is in heat three for Saturday's quarterfinal race at 7:20 p.m.

The final two advancers in Friday's competition were UC Irvine senior Persis William-Mensah and Long Beach State junior Courtne' Davis.  Both performed in the women's 200 meters.  William-Mensah ran a personal and school record 23.56, shaving .21 seconds off her previous best to establish the the UCI 200m standard for the fourth time this season.  She also clocked a UCI record in the quarterfinals of the 100 meters, placing 19th overall in 11.48 seconds.

Davis turned in a 23.69 performance in the 200m to finish 22nd overall – as she had one of the six fastest times outside of the automatic qualifiers.  William-Mensah will run in heat two and Davis in heat three at 7:50 p.m. in Saturday's quarterfinals.

The final day of the NCAA West Preliminary begins with a full slate of field events at noon.  UC Irvine's Barbara Coward competes in the women's hammer, while UC Santa Barbara's Chase Tarr takes his shot in the javelin.  Track competition begins at 6:00 p.m. with Cal State Fullerton participating in the men's 4x100 relay.
