Record Total of Spring All-Academic Honorees Climbs to 456
2018 Big West Spring All-Academic Team
The upward trajectory of Spring Academic All-Big West honorees continued, as the record total climbed for the third straight year.
A grand total of 456 student-athletes were honored in the sports of baseball, softball, beach volleyball, men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track & field, and women’s water polo. To be eligible for the All-Academic team, student-athletes are required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, complete one full year at the member institution prior to the season for which the award is being received (at least a sophomore academically), and competed in at least 50 percent of their team’s contests.
All nine full member institutions posted impressive numbers, with CSUN leading all schools with 65 representatives. A trio of schools – Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and Hawai‘i – collected 61 all-academic citations while Long Beach State chipped in 60. UC Davis was next with 57 honorees followed by UC Irvine with 38. Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside also had solid representation with 38 apiece. UC San Diego, an associate member in men's volleyball, placed seven student-athletes on the team. CSU Bakersfield and Sacramento State, associate members in beach volleyball, put five and four members on the team, respectively.
Women’s track and field sponsored the largest contingent of all-academic honorees with 119. Men’s track and field sported 62 honorees. Forty student-athletes were honored in baseball, 38 in women's tennis and women's water polo, and 37 more in softball. The remainder of the list included beach volleyball (32), men's volleyball (30), women’s golf (24), men's golf (19) and men’s tennis (17).
