Long Beach State and UC Irvine Receive Votes Heading Into Week Two

Women's Soccer Weekly Release No. 2

Imani McDonald and Long Beach State are receiving votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches Poll.

UC Santa Barbara opened its 2018 campaign with a perfect 2-0-0 mark after a 2-1 double overtime win versus Sacramento State.  The Gauchos tallied 17 shots to the Hornet’s two.  The Gauchos then dominated Illinois-Chicago in a 7-0 blowout.  UCSB’s seven scores are the most in a single game for the program since 2004 and the most by anyone in league this season in just one contest.  Santa Barbara leads the Big West with 44 shots in just two contests, 17 more shots than any other program in league.  The Gaucho’s nine goals so far are also the most in the Big West after the first week of action.

UC Riverside opened the first week of play undefeated with a 2-0 mark and two shutouts under its belt in just two contests.  Madeline Feist, the Big West Offensive Player of the Week, netted the game-winner in UCR’s season opener in the 99th minute and was involved in every score for the Highlanders over the weekend.  Feist also scored in Sunday’s showdown and recorded an assist.  UCR next faces Cal State Bakersfield after a week hiatus.

In a dominating 5-1 performance for the Titans, senior Nano Oronoz recorded a hat trick after scoring her first goal of the match in just six minutes.  Oronoz is the first Titan to bag a hat trick since CSF legend, Christina Burkenroad, accomplished the feat against UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 5, 2015.  Freshman Kristen Swales scored two goals of her own to help the Titans notch five scores for the first time since a 6-3 win over San Diego on Sept. 27, 2015.

Cal Poly will face its first ranked opponent of 2018 with a trip to Southern California to face USC.  The Mustangs did not face a ranked opponent last season.  The Big West is currently 0-4 against top-25 teams and looks for its first victory over a ranked opponent.

After Long Beach State opened the 2018 campaign with a 1-1 mark including a 1-0 loss versus No. 2 UCLA and a 1-0 win over SMU, the Beach is receiving votes in the national polls.  Joining the Beach in vote getting is UC Irvine.  The Anteaters fell 1-0 to No. 12 USC to open 2018 action and will face Arizona at home, next.

UC Irvine will host the 2018 Big West women’s soccer tournament should the Anteaters qualify for the league’s postseason tourney. In the instance that UC Irvine does not finish in the top four in conference, the highest-seed will host the action from November 1-4.  Consistent with previous years, the four teams with the best marks in league at the close of the regular season will earn berths to the conference tournament.
