Covert Classic Winners Claim Cross Country Citations

Individual medalists Nick Randazzo of UC Santa Barbara and Miranda Daschian of Cal Poly captured the initial Big West Men's and Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week awards for 2018.

Randazzo and Daschian won their respective races at the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Mark Covert Classic on Saturday at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, Calif.  In a preview of the Big West Championship in late October, both individuals competed against runners from fellow Big West competition in CSF, CSUN, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC Riverside.

Randazzo, a sophomore from Ventura, Calif., traversed the 8K course in 24:41.0.  He won by seven seconds over the Cal State Fullerton duo of Sam Pimentel and Jacob Smith.  Celebrating his 19th birthday that weekend, Randazzo pulled away in the final mile to win his first collegiate race.  He helped the Gauchos finish second overall in the 13 team field.

Daschian led Cal Poly to the team title by a single point over Cal Baptist.  The junior from Atascadero, Calif. earned the individual crown in a time of 17:45.7 on the 5K layout, beating out Arizona State's Daan Haven (17:47.1) and Cal Baptist's Anna Mate (17:52.5).

She averaged a mile pace of 5:43 to outlast the field of 163 individuals in the D-I scoring section.  Daschian's time represented a career best for the 5K distance, bettering her previous mark at UCSB in 2017 by 13.3 seconds.
