CSUN senior Michael Merchan accompanied UCSB Lagoon individual medalists Nick Randazzo and Katie Camarena on the weekly cross country honor roll.
Merchan finished 12th out of 172 competitors at the UC Riverside Invitational in the 8K. The top performer among Big West participants, Merchan clocked 24:32.7 to lead the Matadors to a 13th place finish out of 21 teams. Long Beach State’s Trevor Stangle (24:47.9) and UC Irvine’s Hector Garcia (24:49.4) followed Merchan among the top conference finishers.
The UCSB Lagoon Open featured the host Gauchos, Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton.
Randazzo earned the individual men’s title in 24:53.43, outdistancing teammate Yousef Baddour (25:00.55) and Cal Poly sophomore Jake Ritter (25:02.05). The Gauchos finished second in the team standings.
Camarena won women’s 5K medalist honors by less than a second over teammate Astrid Rosvall. The junior ran the course in 17:06.91, nipping Rosvall (17:07.71) at the finish line. The Gauchos finished third as a team with 48 points.
