Michael Bags Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week Award

UC Santa Barbara sophomore forward Rodney Michael earned national recognition as a member of the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week for games played between Sept. 17-23.

The Freetown, Sierra Leone native accounted for two of three Gaucho goals scored over a six-minute span in the first half of Saturday's 3-1 triumph over No. 15 UCLA.

Facing a 1-0 deficit following an early UCLA goal, the Gauchos leaned on Michael to provide the equalizer in the 16th minute.  Michael latched onto a long ball from Axel Mendez, evaded a defender and deposited a shot to the lower left corner.  He then scored UCSB's third goal just over six minutes later, redirecting a Faouzi Taieb header in the box past the Bruin goalkeeper.

Michael, who shares the Big West goals lead (6) with CSUN sophomore Daniel Trejo and UC Irvine junior Jose Ortiz, earned TDS Team of the Week honors for the second time in his career.  Michael also earned the award on Oct. 2, 2017, after collecting two goals and two assists in a pair of conference wins over Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside.

Michael is the second Gaucho to be recognized by TDS this season, joining freshman Carter Clemmensen, who claimed the accolade on Aug. 28.  Michael is the fourth Big West athlete to notch Team of the Week honors in 2018.
