UC Riverside Maintains Unbeaten Mark As Conference Play Continues

The 2018-19 season marks the 50th anniversary for men’s sports in the Big West Conference, and the 35th for women’s. All season long, the Big West Conference will celebrate the history of all conference-sponsored sports. When it comes to All-Big West first-team selections, Cal State Fullerton is home to the most recipients with 53 honorees. Cal Poly has the second-most selections with 46 while Long Beach State has the third-most with 39.
The club of student-athletes who have received four first-team selections, is al elite one. There have only been two to ever accomplish the feat. UC Santa Barbara’s Jennifer Borcich was the first to ever earn the award four times from 2001-2004, followed by Cal Poly’s Elise Krieghoff more than ten years later from 2012-2015.
BIG WEST AT A GLANCE
RIVERSIDE REMAINS UNBEATEN
Opening league with an unblemished mark at 1-0, UC Riverside maintains its overall unbeaten mark at 10-0-1. Should the Highlanders defeat Cal Poly Friday at home, UCR will boast its best-ever start in program history.
The Highlanders haven’t dropped a regular season match since Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017 versus Long Beach State when the Beach defeated the Highlanders 3-0 at George Allen Field. UCR is the only undefeated team in the Big West. Additionally, the Highlanders have shutout eight opponents to pace the league and have allowed just a two goals all season. With a .194 goals against average, UCR leads the NCAA in the category and is second in the nation with a .955 win-lost-tied percentage just behind Washington State at 10-0-0.
RIVERSIDE CLIMBS THE RPI
Up from No. 51 last week, UC Riverside comes in at No. 44 in this week’s RPI as released by the NCAA, Monday. Four Big West teams crack the top 100 in UCR, Long Beach State (62), Hawai‘i (85) and UC Irvine (89).
RACE FOR BIG WEST TITLE
In the race for the Big West crown, four squads opened league play unbeaten in Long Beach State (0-0-1), UC Irvine (1-0), UC Riverside (1-0) and UC Santa Barbara (1-0) while six squads earned three points in the standings: UCR, UCSB, UCI, UCSB, Hawai‘i and Cal Poly.
CRACKING THE NCAA TOP 10
Multiple student-athletes crack the NCAA top-10 in a variety of categories. With five game-winning-goals, Madeline Feist (UCR) is tied for second-best in the nation, with a .259 GAA, UCR’s Annie Bailey boasts the third-best GAA in the NCAA while her .944 save percentage is also third-best. Her seven shutouts are 8th-best.
