The first weekend of October is greeted with a light cross country slate as only Hawai’i is in action this weekend. With just three weeks remaining until the Big West Championships, teams will have just one more major meet weekend to prepare for the league meet.

The Rainbow Wahine will remain on the islands for the Hawai’i Pacific Invitational on the North Shore of O’ahu. The UH-hosted event will be held at the Kahuku Golf Course, site of the 2016 Big West Championships. The ‘Bows will compete in the 5K across the course against regional competition.

AROUND THE BIG WEST

• Cal Poly had an excellent run of things at the Stanford Invitational last weekend, picking up a pair of top five finishes in the team competitions. The women’s team picked up a fifth place finish in the talented 6K field, led by junior Miranda Daschian’s 11th place finish in 21:17.8. Sophomore Abbey Fisk gave the squad a second finisher in the top 25, crossing the line at 21:43.3 which was good for 25th. The Mustang men came through with a fourth place showing after everyone completed the 8K course. Sophomore Justin Robison also finished in 11th to lead the men, crossing the finish line in 24:29.4. He was one of three Cal Poly runners to finish in the top 20, joined by sophomore Jake Ritter (17th - 24:40.2) and junior Evan Jameson (20th - 24:48.6).

• UC Davis traveled a short distance to the Capital Cross Challenge but the Aggie women made the trip notable as they came away with the team title. The squad was led by freshman Eva Goodisson in seventh place at 21:35.9 over the 6K, the second consecutive week the first-year runner was the top UCD finisher. Junior Julia Lemak was right behind Goodisson in 8th place at 21:36.8, giving the title-winning Aggies two runners in the top 10.

• Two schools headed to the Midwest for meets last weekend as Cal State Fullerton competed in the Roy Griak Invitational and UC Riverside in the Joe Piane Invitational.

The Highlanders hit the course first, competing in an event hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. UCR was led by sophomore Jonathan Lee’s 32nd place finish over the 8K course, crossing the finish in 25:27.11. The women’s 5K course saw freshman Vanessa Gracian led the way for UCR as she finished 48th in 18:40.38.

The Titans found themselves in St. Paul, Minn., for their competition, hosted by the University of Minnesota. On a day the temps hovered in the low 40s, CSF performed well amongst a talented field. The women’s team was led by sophomore Trinity Ruelas who finished 12th overall in the 6K, crossing the finish in 21:47.9. Her junior teammate Samantha Huerta also ran well in her first race of the season, finishing in 15th at 21:51.1. The men’s squad was led by senior Sam Pimentel with an 8K time of 25:15.0, good for 25th place.

• The updated regional rankings have a Central Coast representation for the Big West as Cal Poly appears on both lists. The Mustangs have the 8th ranked women and 10th ranked men.
