Road Teams Treated To Tourney First Round Victories
Home field advantage had no bearing on the outcomes of Wednesday's first round of the 2018 Big West Men's Soccer Tournament, as No. 5 seed UC Davis and No. 6 seed Cal State Fullerton punched their tickets to the semifinals.
No Tricks, Just Treats, as Aggies Advance to Semifinals
Senior political science major Justin Wright scored his fourth goal of the season in the 79th minute that proved to be the game-winner on Wednesday night, helping lift the fifth-seeded UC Davis men's soccer team to a, 3-2, victory over host and fourth-CSUN in a Big West Conference Tournament first-round match at Matador Soccer Field.
The victory propels the Aggies (11-4-3 overall) into Saturday's (Nov. 3) semifinals against top-seeded UC Irvine at 7 p.m. at Anteater Stadium, advancing to the semifinal round for the seventh time in the last 11 seasons and posting a 2-4 record in their previous six trips.
UC Davis and UC Irvine have met twice before in the semifinal round, with the Anteaters posting a 1-0 victory in 2008 and a 2-0 win in 2013 — both played in Irvine, Calif.
The Matadors, who held a slim 11-9 advantage in the shot column for the match, finished their regular season at 9-8-1 overall.
Titans Advance Past UC Santa Barbara on Penalty Kicks
After 110 minutes of action the game was still undecided with a 1-1 score, however, the Titans advanced to the Big West Tournament Semifinals after defeating UCSB in penalty kicks Wednesday night at Harder Stadium.
Fullerton was successful on all five of its penalty kicks with Robert Coronado, Christian Pinzon, Zico Bailey, Alex Juarez and Samuel Goni all buried their shots to close the door on the Gauchos after missing their third attempt.
However, Santa Barbara answered right back in the 27th minute on a goal from Ignacio Tellechea. Thibault Candia crossed the ball through the box and Tellechea was able to hit it in to tie the game up.
In five Big West Conference Tournaments since Head Coach George Kuntz arrived at Fullerton, the Titans have won three games at Santa Barbara. The match official goes down as a tie, but it is the first time the Gauchos have lost at Harder Stadium all season.
