AT A GLANCE

UC DAVIS OPENS WITH PERFECT WEEKEND

For the first time in 10 years, UC Davis opened the 2019 season with a perfect 3-0 mark out of the game.  The Aggies first defeated Montana 2-1 followed by a dominating 10-2 victory over Santa Clara, Friday.  UCD then defeated Montana 10-4 the following day before weather cut the weekend short.

The Aggies hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to UNLV for the 2019 Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic in Las Vegas.

LONG BEACH STATE RECEIVING VOTES IN NATIONAL POLLS
After a 4-1 opening weekend, Long Beach State is receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Softball Poll.  The Beach got off to a fast start in Las Vegas thanks to a grand slam from senior utility Jamie Wren to lift LBSU to a 10-5 win over Southern Utah.  The Beach would drop its only contest of the weekend to North Dakota in a close 2-1 ballgame before closing out the first week of the season with three more victories.  Along with UCLA, Long Beach State will co-host the Stacy Winsberg Invitational this weekend, the Beach will see the diamond five times before Monday.

CAL STATE FULLERTON HAS A WAY WITH WALK-OFFS
Cal State Fullerton recorded three walk-offs in five games after a dominating 8-0 win over Pacific to close out the Titan Classic.  The Titans hosted the tournament over the weekend and open the 2019 season with a 4-1 overall mark after defeating Idaho State  (3-2), Buffalo (5-4 in 8  innings), Utah State (3-2),  and Pacific.  The Titans only loss came at the hands of Louisville (9-0 in 5 innings).  After its early success, CSF continues to receive votes in the national polls for the second-straight week.  The Titans hit the road for the first time in 2019 as they head to Arizona for five games at the Hillenbrand Invitational.

‘TIS THE SEASON FOR TOURNAMENTS
The Big West programs will participate in five different tournaments this weekend.  Hawai‘i and UC Davis head to UNLV for the Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic while CSUN hosts the Early Bird Classic.  Cal State Fullerton travels to Tuscon, Ariz. for the Hillendrand Invitational and UC Santa Barbara heads south to San Diego, Calif. for the Campbell/Cartier Classic.  Long Beach State hosts the Stacy Winsberg Invitational along with UCLA and welcomes Cal Poly and UC Riverside to Los Angeles.

HAWAII’S MIKAELA GRANDIA-MAK MAKES SOME BIG WEST HISTORY
Mikaela Grandia-Mak became the first-ever to receive Big West Freshman of the Week honors after hitting .500 (6-for-12) on the week.  This is the first season the Big West has adopted the honor.  The freshman also went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI against St. Mary’s.
