Big West Clashes On Tap This Week
This week’s men’s volleyball schedule is all about dueling Big West squads. Five matches are on the docket, with each impacting the race for the regular season conference title.
Long Beach State and CSUN make their conference debuts with a home-and-home series. The top-ranked Beach host on Friday and have won nine straight against the Matadors in the Walter Pyramid. The scene shifts Saturday to the Matadome, where CSUN last defeated the Beach in 2016.
Hawai‘i visits UC Irvine for two matches in a highly anticipated showdown between the nation’s second and third-ranked squads. The last time they met, the Rainbow Warriors won in four sets in last year’s Big West Tournament semifinals. Both teams come in sporting impressive winning streaks – UH at 10 straight and UCI with seven in a row.
Red hot UC Santa Barbara, winners of 10 in a row, completes its series against UC San Diego on Friday at home. The Gauchos defeated the Tritons in La Jolla on Feb. 15.
The Big West closed the month of February with a combined record of 26-2. The month included six wins against teams ranked within the AVCA top 10. UC Santa Barbara swept then-No. 3 BYU and then-No. 4 UCLA, Hawai‘i won back-to-back matches against then-No. 8 Stanford, and Long Beach State took down UCLA in straight sets in a rematch of the 2018 national championship.
Overall, the Big West owns a combined non-conference record of 60-18 (.769). The Big West has a winning record against every other conference, including the MPSF (23-12), MIVA (13-5) and EIVA (13-1).
The Big West boasts four of the nation’s top fiive teams according to the Feb. 25 American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. No. 1 LBSU, No. 2 UH, No. 3 UCI and No. 5 UCSB are a combined 49-5 this season.
Protect The ‘Mid
Long Beach State puts its school record 33-match home court winning streak on the line when CSUN visits the Walter Pyramid on Friday. The Beach have not lost at home since March 26, 2016.
Only two programs remain unbeaten in the country, and both belong to the Big West.
• Long Beach State is 13-0 overall and Hawai‘i 10-0.
• UH’s 10 consecutive straight-set wins is tied for the program record also set in 2017. UH is two sets shy of the record for consecutive sets won, 32, also set in 2017.
• UCSB’s current 10-match winning streak is the longest in the Rick McLaughlin era.
• UCI is 6-1 against AVCA Top 15 teams in building an impressive 13-2 record to this point in the season.
