Record Performance Highlights Track & Field Weekly Honor Roll

3/5/2019

Four impressive performances took place among the initial recipients of Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors to christen the 2019 season.

Cal State Fullerton senior Mason Rollins (Bakersfield, Calif./Mira Monte HS) earned Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors after becoming a triple winner at the season-opening RCC Invitational. The sprinter took first place in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x100 relay for the Titans, with all three marks currently ranking No. 1 in the Big West. He tied his personal-best in the 100m with a time of 10.54 and ran a career-best 21.25 in the 200m for his second individual event victory of the meet. Rollins also ran a leg on the 4x100 team that won their race in 40.61 seconds.

UC Davis freshman Kirsten Carter (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa HS) turned in two solid performances at the Cal Opener to garner Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week accolades. Carter placed second in the 100 and 200 meters with both times emerging as No. 1 in the Big West. Her 11.88 finish in the 100m was just 0.03 seconds off the No. 1 runner. Carter was the only Big West runner to finish in under 12 seconds – and one of just two in the nation. It also put her at No. 8 all-time in the UC Davis record book. Carter’s time of 24.46 seconds in the 200m represented the second best time both in the NCAA and West Region.

At the Beach Opener, Long Beach State senior Vincent Calhoun (La Habra, Calif./Poly HS) overcame rainy conditions to unleash a personal-best mark in the high jump, earning him recognition as the Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. The 2017 NCAA All-American established his PR with a mark of 7 feet, 3 inches (2.21m), the highest jump performed by a member of the program in 15 years. The mark not only set a new meet record for the Beach Opener, it also led the nation on the opening weekend of the outdoor season and moved Calhoun to No. 2 in the Beach record book.

UC Irvine senior Barbara Coward (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony HS) won both of her events at the Beach Opener to collect Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week recognition. In fact, she bettered her own school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 196-02 (59.79m), which beat the runner-up by over eight feet. On a rainy Saturday, Coward also captured the discus title by over 10 feet with an NCAA-leading heave of 156-06 (47.70m). Coward emerged from week one of the outdoor season as the nation’s leader in both events.
