Three Schools Recognized On Track & Field Weekly Honor Roll

The recipients of Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors came from three different schools.

UC Santa Barbara freshman Brian Schulz (Santa Rosa, Calif./El Molino HS) earned Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors after placing first in the 5000 meters at a tri meet with Cal Poly and UC Riverside. Schulz ran the event in 14:30.22 which ranks him No. 1 in the Big West and third in the country.

Cal State Fullerton junior Samantha Huerta (La Mirada, Calif./Santa Rosa HS) broke her own school record in the mile to capture Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week accolades. Huerta finished in first place at the Ben Brown Invitational with a time of 4:46.77, eclipsing the previous mark of 4:48.02 set in 2018. Converted to 1,500 meters, Huerta’s time is 4:25.52, which is No. 1 in the nation according to TFRRS. She won the race by over 13 seconds.

UC Santa Barbara senior Kordell Hampton (Lemon Grove, Calif./Helix HS) took home two first-place finishes at the UCSB Tri-Meet to claim Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week kudos. The thrower helped the Gauchos to victory over Cal Poly and UC Riverside as he threw the hammer 184-07 (56.28m) and the discus 173-08 (52.93m). Hampton’s marks are No. 1 in the Big West for the discus and No. 3 for the hammer. He already is ranked No. 2 in the nation in the discus after recording a distance of 179-06 at the Beach Opener on March 1.

UC Irvine senior Barbara Coward (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony HS) notched her second straight Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week award. The ‘Eater standout picked up her second straight individual victory in the hammer throw, with a heave of 187 feet, 4 inches (57.09m). That mark beat the competition by 12 feet and would rank her among the top three in the nation if she didn’t already hold the No. 1 spot at 196-02. Coward also finished first among collegians – and second overall – with a season-best discus toss of 175-06 (53.50m) that also puts her No. 1 on the NCAA leaderboard.
