UC Santa Barbara Men's Tennis Battles Two Top 20 Opponents

CAL STATE FULLERTON TAKES OVER FIRST PLACE
Cal State Fullerton took over first place in the women’s tennis standings with two big wins last week.
The Titans knocked off two of the top contending teams for this year’s regular season title – Long Beach State and Hawai‘i – to improve to 3-0 in the Big West.
The Titans have started out 3-0 in conference play for the third time in the last four seasons. In another showdown with a Big West opponent, CSF attempts to move to 4-0 on Saturday against CSUN.
CSF has won six straight matches, the longest currently of any conference squad.
UC Irvine has won five straight contests, and six of its last seven, with the most wins (12) in the Big West.
The ‘Eaters are 3-0 on a current five-match homestand. They host Illinois State on Thursday.
The CSUN women have won four straight contests and enjoying the fruits of a seven-match home swing. In addition to hosting CSF this weekend, the Matadors also welcome in Omaha next Tuesday.
GAUCHO MEN READY FOR TOP 20 SQUADS
The UC Santa Barbara men’s tennis team has rebounded nicely from a three-match losing streak with three consecutive victories, doing so in impressive fashion against Grand Canyon (6-1), Pepperdine (7-0) and Loyola Marymount (5-2).
The Gauchos (6-4) now turn their attention to a couple of potential season defining contests. UCSB takes its best swing at No. 20 UCLA on Thursday before hosting No. 17 Oregon on Friday. The Bruins and Ducks represent UCSB’s second and third ranked opponents this season. UCSB lost at No. 5 USC earlier this season.
CAL POLY HOSTS NO. 50 UTAH
Cal Poly cleaned up with a pair of solid home victories last week against UNLV and Denver. The Mustangs look for their third straight win on Saturday at home against No. 50 Utah. Freshman Gary Vardanyan is an impressive 7-0 in dual singles at the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 positions in the Mustang lineup.
GAUCHO TRIO RANKED IN ITA SINGLES POLL
The Oracle/ITA men’s singles rankings featured three UC Santa Barbara players ranked within the top 125.
Senior Nicolas Moreno de Alboran is the highest ranked player among the three Gauchos. He’s No. 13 this week. Teammate Joseph Guillin is ranked No. 39, while sophomore Victor Krustev sits at No. 94.
INDIAN WELLS HOSTS BIG WEST TOURNAMENT
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Tournament for the 16th consecutive year. One of the premier facilities in the United States – and a host to the BNP Paribas Open – Indian Wells will host all six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 25-28. Since 2004, the first year the tournament was held at IWTG, the UCSB men have won nine titles while LBSU is the women’s leader with 11.
